February 2008, 24th Annual General Meeting
President’s Report to the Chapter members
ISACA Wellington Chapter Overview
I can confidently report that the Chapter continues to be in fine
health. Our membership to 18 February 2008 had increased to 217, our
highest ever figure. Interestingly, 3
years ago, in the 2005 president’s report, membership was 117, the highest ever
that time. This year is also the 25th Anniversary of the ISACA
Wellington Chapter, a timescale which one would judge puts us into the category
of a ‘well established learned institute’.
Participation in activities at all levels of the Chapter remains
strong. Our financial situation remains healthy despite a financially
disappointing result for CACS 2007.
Interestingly though this was a very good CACS conference, with highly
commendable feedback, and remarks from Australian visitors such as, ‘.. this
was the best CACS conference that I’ve ever attended’.
The Chapter committee has worked hard this year and we’ve achieved most
of what we set out to do, despite a delayed start to 2007 and resignation of
several committee members due to work commitments.
For the purpose of reporting to the meeting I’ll call on members of the
committee to themselves briefly describe what we’ve achieved over the past year.
In summary, we've provided:
· End of month lunch
time events, which Alan Heward our Events Manager will describe.
· A ‘security metrics’
education day which Paul Blowers, Security Leader will describe.
· Our CISA and CISM
exam study groups progress will be described by Lesa McKenzie and Bernard
O’Brien, who are our CISA and CISM co-ordinators respectively.
· There was CACS 2007,
which was held in Auckland but which the Wellington chapter co-sponsored and
played a major part in organising.
· The development of a
new, ‘content managed’ web site (for which there will be a short contributions
training sessions after the meeting).
· A CISA/CISM
promotions event, and combined Christmas social
· Pursuit of NZQA
(gaining an understanding of current policy) with regards getting CISA and CISM
qualifications recognised.
Thanks for 2007
To organise all of these initiatives requires time and resources, and
the support of the membership, so I’d like to thank all members for their
continued excellent support this year.
With respect to the lunchtime and other events, I would like to
especially thank Alan Heward for his very significant efforts in organising
speakers and events, and for all the speakers who devoted their time freely to
educate us in 2007.
We have of course held joint events with IIA, which has proved a very
successful experiment and therefore we plan to continue with these.
Our thanks go to Deloitte for allowing us to use their premises for this
purpose.
Our thanks also to KPMG who have continued to provide hugely valuable
support with their premises, sponsorship of meetings and the Christmas event.
Thanks go to Sam Wilson who has managed to shift our accounts into a
proper accounting package despite huge pressure from studies and work.
Many thanks to Lesa McKenzie for doing such an excellent job as
Secretary for the year, as well as running the CISA study group as CISA
co-ordinator.
Paul Blowers deserves a big thank you as he put in significant time and
effort to arrange the security metrics education day and provide leadership in
the security area.
Also thank to Bernard O’Brien who continues to provide excellent support
to our CISM exam candidates.
Thanks to Nitish Verma who has done a fine job in a not so well defined
role as Liaison co-ordinator.
Thanks to Andrew Stephen, who was almost press ganged into developing
our new web site in addition to his day job, and who has agreed to continue as
E-channels co-ordinator.
Special thanks to Alisdair McKenzie who represented the Wellington
Chapter for CACS and without whose invaluable help it would have been very
difficult to take on the role of president.
Also, special thanks to Peter Mulligan, who has put his hand up yet
again, this time to progress the formation of a Christchurch sub-chapter.
Finally I would like to thank those committee members who put in effort
before being forced to resign due to pressures of their day time jobs:
· Alin Ungureanu (ex
Vice President)
· Natasha Templeton (Secretary)
· Catherine Waugh
(Governance Leader)
· Hayden Saunders (E-Channels
Co-ordinator)
· Gary Hinson
(E-Channels Editor)
· Lesa McKenzie (as
Secretary, she continues as CISA Co-ordinator)
· Craig Pattison
(Assurance Leader)
· Alison Holt
· Dave Farrelley
Looking forward to 2008
At today’s AGM, I complete my first term as ISACA Chapter President, a
position which I have been very much enjoying.
This next year promises to be an exciting one, as we look to forge
closer relationship with the Auckland Chapter and create a new Christchurch sub-chapter.
The new CGEIT qualification we expect will also see an influx of a different
kind of membership, which will be both an asset and a challenge. Then, subject
to the deliberations of the 2008 committee I expect that this coming year we
will also be focusing on getting our qualifications better recognised by NZ
government agencies. This is in addition to organising our monthly events,
education days (or half days), and continuing to operate the exam support
groups.
Do please contact me or any of the committee if you have any suggestions
or requests. We’re here to try to make this a worthwhile association to be a
part of, particularly from a local perspective, and we wish to be open to
members input and transparent in our decisions to strive to achieve this goal.
So I would like to again thank you, our esteemed members for your continued
support for the Chapter and to wish you all the best for the rest of 2008.
